C'est dans le nord de la France et en Belgique que l'on rencontre ce patronyme. Il s'agit apparemment d'un nom wallon, sur lequel on peut hésiter entre plusieurs significations : soit une variante de Bottier (= le métier de bottier), soit le wallon botî (= porteur de hotte), soit plutôt le wallon namurois boûtî (= bouvier). Denière possibilité, un nom de personne d'origine germanique, Bodhari (bod = messager + hari = armée).
